Faust

Sibyl gathers flowers for Marguerite, but as Mephistopheles predicted, they wither immediately. Mephistopheles and Faust watch. The atmosphere of innocence surrounding Marguerite moves Faust. He is aware of his desire to destroy her.

Marguerite cannot sleep. Excited by her meeting with the young man, she sees the jewelry box Mephistopheles left for her. When she opens the box and tries on the jewelry, she sees another woman in the mirror, and is even more confused by the encouragement of her neighbor, Marthe.

Faust and Mephistopheles appear. Mephistopheles courts Marthe and leaves with her, clearing the way for Faust so he can seduce Marguerite. After the first kiss, Marguerite becomes frightened and goes into the house.

Mephistopheles produces an intoxicating perfume scented with night flowers. The perfume affects Marguerite, who confesses her love for Faust to the night. When he receives the signal, Faust calls Marguerite’s name, and this time she responds to him. Mephistopheles now has a hold over both souls.
