Take 5 - Between Bach and Brubeck - Saxophone Virtuoso Steve Wilson - Hot Jazz Series 2026-2027

An intriguing meeting of two musical worlds – classical and jazz. In the spirit of the Third Stream movement, which emerged in the second half of the 20th century, a unique dialogue is born between the structured architecture and harmonies of academic music and the freedom, drive, and art of improvisation inherent in jazz.

A quartet of outstanding musicians – Steve Wilson (saxophone), Alon Nechushtan (piano), Juraj Oron (double bass), and Dani Benedict (drums) – presents a rich program that unites works that have become significant in the history of the rapprochement between these musical traditions. Pieces to be performed include Take Five by Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, "Tribute to Bach" by Oscar Peterson, "Tribute to Chopin" by Dave Brubeck, as well as Blues Baroque by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet.

The influence of the "third stream" extended far beyond jazz and significantly impacted the development of jazz-rock. A striking example is Keith Emerson, who was inspired by the music of Aaron Copland and created an impressive synthesis of classical tradition and progressive rock. The concert will also feature the composition Jerusalem by the legendary trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

This evening will become a true musical mosaic, where familiar genre boundaries dissolve, opening up space for a bright and inspiring dialogue between classical music, jazz, and free improvisation.
