A series of three meetings on French chanson, viewed through the lens of Paris, literature, and art, at the Magid Community Center in Tel Aviv. Each meeting is purchased separately.
Over three sessions in the auditorium of the Magid Community Center, we will follow the great French men and women throughout history from a different and original perspective—that of the French chanson. All sessions will feature a rich variety of songs, performance footage, and film clips, all translated into Hebrew. Led by Dr. Aviv Amit.
Purchase is for a single session.
Some cities can be discovered through their streets, while others can be discovered through the songs written about them. Paris may be the only city whose streets themselves sound like a chorus. In this session, we will embark on a journey from Montmartre to Saint-Germain, following Édith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Jacques Brel, Barbara, Georges Brassens, Yves Montand, Dalida, Enrico Macias, and others. Through songs, archival footage, and stories, we will discover how the city shaped its artists, and how the artists shaped Paris’s image in the world’s cultural memory.
In France, literature does not remain between the pages of a book. It seeps into the street, onto the stage, and into song. Writers and poets continue to live on in the culture not only thanks to their writings, but also through the way their work resonates in music. Through Victor Hugo, George Sand, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Romain Gary, and others, we will examine how the chanson became a living cultural memory, and how a song can be a literary interpretation, a tribute, and a new way of reading France’s great works.
What do Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Chagall, and the French chanson have in common? They all attempted to capture an elusive moment and grant it eternal life. In this session, we will follow the dialogue between painting and music: from the Impressionists who captured Paris’s changing light to the singers who gave a voice to those landscapes, cafés, squares, and figures. This is a journey to the place where color becomes sound, and sound becomes memory.
