“My Mom Called Me Rottweiler” at Tzavta

A story about a family anomaly interwoven with honesty, pain, and hindsight humor: Mia leaves her childhood home and sets out in rebellion against the deafening silence that accompanied her childhood and left her itching with questions. In a genre- and language-crossing journey between Ashdod, New York, and Jerusalem, Mia searches for a safe space where it is permitted and encouraged to talk about everything. Winner of the Best Writing Award at the 2024 Jerusalem Theater Festival.

The show was developed in the Spotlight Incubator at the Nisan Nativ Acting Studio in Jerusalem. But don’t worry—at the beginning of the show, expectations will be aligned. Really. Don’t worry. Not at this stage.

Mia leaves her childhood home and sets out in rebellion against the deafening silence that accompanied her childhood and left her itching with questions. In a genre- and language-crossing journey between Ashdod, New York, and Jerusalem, Mia searches for a safe space where it is permitted and encouraged to talk about everything. Sometimes she wags her tail, sometimes bares her teeth, determined to succeed—she spares no person, event, or place she encounters, digging into the trunk of the neighborhood secondhand dealer, Anne Frank’s diaries, and shadowy stand-up comedy clubs.

Created and performed by Uria “Georgie” Cohen | Artistic accompaniment: Dor Zweigenbaum | Co-director: Michael Peled | Recordings and sound editing: Shari Atzitz, Noga Nehemias, Anat Harash | Running time: approximately 60 minutes | From the judges’ citation: “(...) Impressive and varied writing and performance, with command of a broad range of writing and acting techniques, creating an emotional roller coaster moving between comedic stand-up and personal tragedy.”
