A guided tour of the museum focusing on the building’s architectural history, the stories behind the scenes, and the community vision of the Tel Aviv–Yafo City Museum as expressed through the collection of stories.
Come tour the building, established in 1925 as a luxury hotel designed by architect Moshe Cherner, which later became City Hall and, about two years ago, began its new life as the Tel Aviv–Yafo City Museum. During the tour, we will discover how its location atop a hill in the heart of the city’s cultural and business center influenced the building, learn about its unique Neoclassical style, and view Bialik Square from the round mayor’s balcony, where we can also find examples of the Land of Israel’s eclectic style from the 1920s and of the International Style, or Bauhaus, which characterizes Tel Aviv in the 1930s.
We will tell the story of the building’s renovation and preservation, begun in 2009 to mark Tel Aviv’s centenary, and share a behind-the-scenes look at the establishment of the new museum, a home for all the city’s residents. Together, we will explore the renewed renovation of the mayor’s office, which is being completed these very days and offers a glimpse into the past, including through a rare copy of the book Tel Aviv, edited by Alter Druyanov, which describes the founding days of little Tel Aviv.
