A bittersweet comedy by Hanokh Levin, with a live orchestra. Performed at Gesher Theatre, 9 Jerusalem Boulevard, Tel Aviv-Yafo.
A bleak comedy by Hanokh Levin: an ugly, poor young man marries Popche, who is as ugly as a crocodile, because he has no other choice. When the two fail to fulfill the commandment to “be fruitful and multiply,” a bizarre and crazy journey begins, involving the parents of the bride and groom, a matchmaker, a brother-in-law, and a prostitute. In this bizarre journey, everyone tries to make it possible for the “incapable one” to finally mate with the “formless one.” Accompanied by a live orchestra.
The play Yakish and Popche is Hanokh Levin’s 19th play. Like many of his plays, it was directed by him and premiered at the Cameri Theatre in 1986. Yakish and Popche is a funny, witty, fast-paced play, filled with many linguistic flashes. Levin defined the play as a bleak comedy about the images, expectations, and stereotypes that people impose on the sex lives of others and themselves. Everyone interferes in the sex lives of others; everyone tries to be what others see in their fantasies, instead of simply being who they are.
