Two-session wood finishing course on October 5 and 12, 2026, at Da Vinci Culture in Tel Aviv. We will learn techniques for changing texture, color, and tone.
A short course consisting of two sessions, 3 hours per session, led by Adam Kobi.
Morning schedule:
In the course, we will learn wood-finishing techniques and delve into the reasoning behind the sequence of work.
We will learn how to alter texture through sanding, brushing, or milling, and how to affect color and tone in different ways, using base materials, reactive colors, and a choice of procedures.
We will begin by looking at the journey wood undergoes—from the forest, through the sawmill, to the woodworking shop. We will discuss fiber structures and how wood responds to changes in humidity and its surroundings.
We will understand why the heartwood tends to warp and crack, the difference between earlywood and latewood, and how each layer affects the appearance of the wood and the work done with it.
From there, we will delve into practical techniques: we will learn how to alter texture through sanding, brushing, or milling, and how to affect color and tone in different ways, using base materials, reactive colors, and a choice of procedures that tells the story differently each time.
We will become familiar with different types of finishes and understand the differences between them and what each one offers.
After demonstrating techniques and delving into the reasoning behind the sequence of work—why it is worthwhile to begin with a particular material, how to choose colors suited to the grain and intended use, and what should or should not be done—we will get to work.
Each participant will create several unique wooden boards and then assemble a personal catalog from the samples they have prepared. We will develop a sharp eye and a deeper understanding of finishing that is not only aesthetic, but also emotional and expressive.
