An artists’ gathering and lecture on creating during wartime, marking three years since October 7, at ANU – Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv. The gathering includes a tour of the exhibition and a discussion.
At the gathering marking three years since October 7, we will meet the artists Tamara Kalus, Yarden Bennett, and Yehuda Feldmar, who will present their new works joining the exhibition and share their creative processes and the questions that have arisen in the space between personal and collective memory. The gathering will begin with a tour of the “October 7” exhibition.
The “October 7” exhibition opened a short time after the disaster, out of a desire and need to present a momentary snapshot and bear witness to the unique outburst of creativity that has emerged in Israeli society since the beginning of the war. The exhibition features artworks and a documentary installation, and is accompanied by a playlist of Israeli music comprising the soundtrack of the period. “October 7” brings together 25 artists whose works echo the difficult days experienced by Israeli society and the Jewish people since October 7. Three years later, we seek to examine, from another perspective, the role of art and creativity during wartime. The exhibition has recently added works by graduates of the School of Design at the University of Haifa—voices bringing forth creations in the spirit of the period, between rupture and pain and the search for resilience and optimism.
The central part of the gathering will be devoted to the lecture “Spring Cannot Be Canceled—On Optimistic Creativity in Difficult Times” by the artist, designer, and multidisciplinary creator Gabi Salzman, who will speak about the power of art, humor, and creativity in times of uncertainty. Through works he has created, personal stories, and his mobilization following October 7, Salzman presents optimism not as naïveté, but as an active stance and a choice to act, create, and find a crack of light even within the pain.
