Twelfth Night

A play that begins with a shipwreck and ends with three weddings.

A storm at sea carries Viola and her twin brother Sebastian’s ship to the shores of Illyria.

While Sebastian is missing, Viola decides that in order to survive in a foreign land, she must disguise herself as a man and work in the service of Duke Orsino.

The duke recruits her as a love messenger to the object of his desire, Countess Olivia—a mission that proves impossible for Viola, who falls in love with the duke herself.

Olivia, for her part, falls in love דווקא with Viola, who is disguised as a man.

With genius, Shakespeare creates a dazzling comedy.

The situation in Illyria becomes increasingly complicated, and every distinction between fantasy and reality becomes completely blurred.

Only the surprise appearance of Sebastian, Viola’s twin brother, untangles the web of relationships and brings with it one of the most beautiful endings in world drama.

Director Roni Brodetsky, one of the most talented and important voices in contemporary Israeli theatre, makes her debut at Habima Theatre with a bold and surprising version of the comedy Twelfth Night, in which, for the first time in Israel, the cast will consist entirely of women.

Together, they will ask deeply funny questions about desire, identity, and pretense.

This production uses Foley technique, meaning that sound effects are created live onstage using objects.

This technique adds another layer of action and drama, creating a comic connection between movement and sound.
