Between Karaites and Samaritans – A Journey to Israel’s Ancient Communities
Local guides. December 16, 2026
We will embark on a fascinating journey following the Karaites and Samaritans—two ancient groups that have preserved their identity, faith, and unique traditions throughout the generations. We will begin the day at the World Center for Karaite Judaism in Ramla, where we will learn about the history of the Karaite community and visit its main synagogue. We will discover the unique characteristics of Karaite Judaism, which relies solely on the written Torah, and learn about the prayer customs in the synagogue, including removing one’s shoes at the entrance, praying on carpets, and the kneeling and prostration movements still practiced there today.
We will continue to the Samaritan neighborhood in Holon for a personal and moving encounter with Ronit Tzedaka, a member of the Samaritan community. Through her personal story, we will discover what life is like in an ancient community that preserves a thousands-year-old tradition alongside life in the modern State of Israel. We will enjoy a traditional lunch, as is customary in Samaritan family homes on Shabbat, based on vegetarian dishes and recipes passed down from generation to generation. We will visit the Samaritan synagogue, glimpse ancient Torah scrolls, and hear about the community’s unique way of life. We will conclude the day with Ronit’s musical performance, “Secrets Between the Lines,” a personal and powerful show revealing the tension between a 3,000-year-old tradition and a modern woman searching for her voice, offering a moving perspective on choice, faith, and identity.
