Noches de Espanya (Spanish Nights)
Musical starring Uri Benai/Gil Kaplan, Elinor Aharon/Sofi Tsedaka, and the Aqua Oriental Ensemble.
A musical full of longing and mutual support. A dazzling Spanish celebration. Dancers, actors, seven musicians, and four singers—18 artists on one stage. Two families, during their fascinating journey to Israel, meet by chance and share a common dream—to live together on Mount Kanaan in Safed. Together they embark on a journey filled with adventures, dangers, romance, thrills, and many dreams.
The play is based on the unique story of Grandma Louise and Grandpa Sassie, British subjects who aliyah from Tunisia to Safed and lived there until their last day. The result is a rich and captivating theatrical experience: Ladino from the heart, Spanish, Maghreb singing, and the best Israeli classics with an Andalusian touch, alongside excellent acting.
Grandma Louise and Grandpa Sassie smuggle their eldest son, Meir, to Palestine. The British Army insists on conscripting him, which is out of the question. The longing for Meir is intense. Their younger son, Chaim, who now lives with them in Marseille, is full of longing for his beloved Sarah, who still lives in Tunisia with her parents. These events shake Louise and Sassie, who face a difficult dilemma: whether to stay in Marseille, indulge in comfortable lives of wealth and prosperous trade, or make aliyah to Israel and reunite with their eldest son—but what about Chaim, the younger son with a broken heart? No less important is their commitment to the Rescue Committee; they were part of a secret network of agents for special missions.
