A series of three reading and discussion meetings on the works of Shaul Tchernichovsky (Agnon) by Bahla Ben-Eliyahu, focusing on the theme of motherhood and its various representations in his literature. The meetings will include readings from various stories and novels, analyzed within the context of family relationships and longing for motherhood.

Reading Shmuel Yosef Agnon: Motherhood and the Symbolic Mother
As the year draws to a close and the new one begins, we gather at Beit Agnon for three reading sessions with Belea Ben-Aliya. We will read and discuss motherhood and "maternal-ness" as they are shaped and presented by Agnon in his stories and novels. We will encounter the maternal warmth, love, as well as the entanglement, complexity, and longing. We will read about family ties, the yearning for maternity, and the symbolic maternity in Agnon’s work – Jerusalem as a mother, and more.
We will move between closeness and distance. We will meet mothers whose peace is tied by a thread to their children’s peace (in the stories "The Handkerchief" and "In the Prime of Her Life"), as well as absent mothers and present mothers, with the deep internalization of mothers who have departed (in the novels "Yesterday, Day Before Yesterday" and "The Bride's Canopy," and in the novella "Oath of Fidelity," among others), and the deep connection between 'city' and 'mother' – from confusion and tangles in the novel "A Simple Story" up to Jerusalem and Tehila in Agnon’s masterpiece – "Tehila."
