A collage of two dance performances premiering as part of the Shalem Dance Festival. “Esperanza” is a dance and aerial hoop solo exploring relationships with hope. “LIKE A WOMAN” presents three women trying to learn from one another how to be a woman.
ESPERANZA (“Hope” in Spanish)
A solo dance and aerial hoop performance exploring my relationship with hope.
I’m not sure I remember the last time I truly believed in it. It appears, makes promises, offers something to hold on to—and then slips away.
There is something addictive about hope.
Esperanza was born from the desire to examine this addiction: the anticipation, the grasping, the rupture, and the choice to hope again. Through a body moving between the ground and the air, and a hoop whose height changes throughout the piece, I explore the loop in which we continue to believe, even after learning how painful it is to fall.

“One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.” — Simone de Beauvoir
“What is it that she has? What does she have that made her choose this? What was taken from her, that she chose this way? What does she have? Everything is, of course, subjective. And not only that—it also changes as the hours pass. Sometimes it seems she has something; sometimes it seems as though it was taken from her. It is highly subjective, highly dependent on moods. And always—and this is the main thing—always highly dialectical.”
— Esther Peled, from A Large Opening from Below
Three women try to learn from one another how to be women. They merge, get dressed, fall apart, and start over. Three friends try to hold on to time—quickly, before it runs out.
