The tragicomedy “Papa,” starring Sergei Makovetsky, will take place on December 16, 2026, at the Haifa Auditorium. A play about family and fading memory.
Sergey Makovetsky shines in the poignant tragicomedy Dad. This performance is a true triumph for Sergey Makovetsky. Israeli audiences know and appreciate him for his brilliant roles in productions such as Paper Marriage, Moonlight, Honeymoon, and the autobiographical show Chance Encounters, as well as for his outstanding film roles.
On stage, the actor masterfully reveals new, complex, and subtle aspects of the human soul, demonstrating transitions from harsh self-irony and aristocratic pride to intense, almost childlike emotions. Audiences will see their beloved actor in a completely new guise…
The plot grips the soul with its remarkable realism and keeps viewers in suspense through a profound narrative that resonates with everyone. The protagonist, André, has turned 80, and his familiar world is rapidly slipping away. Who is he—a dancer or an engineer? Does he live in Paris or London? And why have those closest to him suddenly become strangers?
Constantly losing his beloved watch, he desperately tries to maintain control over his mind. Even as his consciousness rebels, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy, he remains faithful to his conviction: he is still strong and can defend his position.
Alongside Sergey Makovetsky, the role of his daughter Anna is brilliantly performed by Maria Ryshchenkova, one of the most talented theater and film actresses. Her character finds herself torn between her love for her father, who is sinking ever deeper into his illness, and her desire to preserve her own life. Maria Ryshchenkova’s subtle psychological performance creates an atmosphere of barely perceptible tension on stage, allowing the audience to feel the full depth of family bonds.
Director Vladimir Beldiyan, a student of the great Rimas Tuminas, has created a unique psychological space on stage. He does not simply tell a story, but gives the audience the opportunity to look into the protagonist’s fading consciousness and see the world through a distorted prism, where illogical reactions become responses to a changing reality.
The music of Faustus Latėnas, the great Lithuanian composer, gives the story a distinctive, hypnotic sound. His musical themes perfectly underscore the protagonist’s fading memories, holding the audience’s attention until the very end.
The performance is based on the celebrated play by Florian Zeller, a renowned star of contemporary drama, who received France’s leading theater award—the Molière Award—for this work. This powerful story has already conquered the theaters of Paris, London, New York, Sydney, Hong Kong, and many other countries, and will soon be presented in Israel as well.
Cast: Ivan Brovin, Oleg Rebrov, Natalia Ushakova, Polina Sinilnikova.
