“What if” is the screenwriting premise of this successful film from the late 1990s.
The plot follows two different storylines that diverge just after Helen is fired from her job and rushes to the London Underground: in one, she catches the Tube, while in the other, the doors close in front of her.
The two storylines lead her to different insights and encounters, ultimately forcing her to make clear decisions about her life.
This is a sophisticated comedy that earned great popularity three decades ago—and deservedly so. From Peter Howitt’s light direction to Gwyneth Paltrow’s engaging performance, the result is an enjoyable film that tickles both the mind and the heart.
