"Rebellious" – A new Israeli play by Amnon Levy
In Mea Shearim, a group of women decided to rebel against the community leadership to save one of their own from an unhappy and abusive marriage. They use the only ancient and effective weapon at their disposal: abstinence from their husbands. They refuse to visit the mikveh and initiate a movement of abstaining from marital relations until their friend is released from the bonds of her marriage.
"Rebellious" is an exciting and humorous drama by Amnon Levy, which brings a women's struggle for equality in the most unexpected place. The women of the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood decide that the value of mutual aid to a woman in distress outweighs even the commandment to procreate. They courageously confront the men, suffer ostracism and persecution, yet continue their fight despite the heavy cost.
Levy, who wrote "Scheindeleh" – one of the great successes of Israeli theater – returns to the ultra-Orthodox woman in Mea Shearim and documents her struggle for independence. Levy draws inspiration for the play from a similar abstinence movement that recently occurred in Satmar, New York, demanding the release of a chained woman ("agunah"). The movement there succeeded and astonished the ultra-Orthodox world.
