'Three Doves' X 'What Are You Thinking About' Book Club X Migdal Shalom Library:
In a series of four meetings, held biweekly, we will read and write inspired by the city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. In the first three meetings, we will follow three of the great authors and poets whose work features the city: Nathan Alterman, Yaakov Shabtai, and Orly Castel-Bloom. The fourth and final meeting will be a writing workshop focused on city and space writing. Each author has been paired with a literary expert who will guide the shared exploration of the selected text and lead the execution.
The reading of the texts will focus on how each writer approaches writing the first Hebrew city: what role it plays in the work, what kind of event it generates, and what meeting unfolds between the writer and the urban space? Does Tel Aviv appear as a main character or does it shimmer in the background? How does it influence the rhythm, structure, poetics, language, and narrative of the work? And how can one recreate something of these when facing a blank page? These issues will also be joined by other thoughts connected to place and time: when the writing is done, what the social and creative environment of the writer is, the historical period in which the text was written, and more.
The meetings will last about an hour and a half, with the first part of each meeting dedicated to reading the text, discussion, and dialogue; the second half will be dedicated to a writing exercise inspired by it, with different directions, thoughts, and formulas for execution.
This series will focus on Tel Aviv-Jaffa as an urban space. In future series, we will write based on works that deal with the city's urban nature (there is such nature!), and the Tel Aviv sea.
Who is it for?
The best way to learn to write is to read. To understand the magic of reading, it is also worth trying to write. Reading and writing inspired by the city invites mutual enrichment between the place and the people who inhabit it. The series is suitable for city wanderers, residents, visitors of all kinds, its lovers (and haters!), readers who enjoy delving into texts, writers at any stage of their journey, and anyone who loves words and wants to explore different aspects of the craft.

The meetings will be held every other Wednesday, from 18:30 to 20:00, during the months of September and October.
