Into the Wild

We discovered where the bus abandoned in the desert was moved. A couple of years ago, we unsuccessfully searched for it in the Nahal Paran riverbed. It turned out to be standing in the Rafael firing ranges near the Ramon Crater.

Before the bus is moved again, I decided to organize a mini autonomous overnight trip near the bus abandoned in the middle of the desert—a kind of Into the Wild in the middle of the Negev.

The bus can be reached on foot or by passenger car via a winding dirt road. Those who wish to arrive directly at the camp should make sure to do so in daylight.

HIKE PLAN

FRIDAY

We meet at 3:30 p.m. on Route 40, beyond Mitzpe Ramon. In the evening, there will be a 4-kilometer route to the overnight location near the bus. Most likely, we will carry our belongings ourselves.

SATURDAY

At 6 a.m., we will watch the sunrise and head through the desert back to the cars. The route will be 8–10 km.

Bring 5 liters of water per person, snacks, hiking shoes, a sleeping bag, and a sleeping mat.

The guide’s services are “conditionally free.” As is customary at apartment concerts, at the end of the hike everyone can put as much as they see fit into the hat. The organizational cost of the hike is approximately 1,000 shekels, plus a great deal of time. Your donations make it possible to continue the project and prepare new routes. A diverse range of people join the hikes—from Masa participants and new immigrants to seasoned programmers. For this reason, we try not to specify an amount. The main thing is for all participants to feel comfortable.
