An evening dedicated to the music of Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers. Silver was one of the most important and influential figures in the history of modern jazz and was a leading force in shaping the hard-bop sound in the 1950s. He combined blues, gospel, groove, and Latin influences, composing works that have become jazz classics, including "Song for My Father," "The Preacher," "Nica's Dream," and "Peace." Many of these continue to be played on jazz stages worldwide.
At the heart of the evening is a special musical meeting between flutist Ilan Salem and his son, trumpeter Hallel Salem—two musicians from different generations, each with an impressive artistic path. Although they often play together when circumstances allow, Hallel's visits to Israel are rare, making this an exceptional opportunity to hear them share the same stage. Ilan Salem is one of the most prominent and influential flutists in Israeli jazz. A graduate of Berklee College of Music and recipient of the Prime Minister's Prize for Jazz Composers, he has been a key figure in shaping the local jazz scene for decades—as a performer, composer, teacher, and mentor to generations of musicians.
Hallel Salem, currently residing in Paris, is part of a generation of Israeli trumpeters active on the international scene. After years in New York, he moved to France, where he regularly performs with leading ensembles and develops an international career as a bandleader, composer, and sought-after musician. The meeting between him and Ilan is not only a father-son meeting but also a convergence of two musical approaches, united by a deep common language and a profound love of jazz.
The quintet is completed by three top-tier Israeli jazz musicians: pianist Katya Toobool, bassist Or Bareket, and drummer Aviv Cohen. Each brings years of rich musical experience, creating a cohesive and attentive ensemble that provides Horace Silver's music with depth, groove, and improvisational freedom.
