On August 25 at 19:30 Israel Time, we will continue our conversation with art historian Alina Aksenova in the "Path of a Masterpiece" cycle. We will explore how Victorian England suddenly became obsessed with King Arthur, Gothic architecture, and the Middle Ages.
We will discover how William Morris turned his own home into a manifesto against factories and laid the foundation for modern design.
We will discuss the women of the Pre-Raphaelites, who were far less "muses" than is commonly believed.
We will find out why Dante Gabriel Rossetti painted the same woman more than twenty times—almost always as a fatal beauty.
We will discuss how industrialists, steamships, and sugar cubes helped create one of the UK's major museums.
And, of course, we will learn how to read Proserpine so that pomegranates, ivy, and a wisp of smoke cease to be just beautiful details.
About the Speaker:
Alina Aksenova is an art historian, public lecturer, and teacher at the HSE School of Design. She is the author of books and educational courses on art for children and adults, and the creator of podcasts for the children's radio station "Gusgush." At various times, she participated in projects such as the "University for Children" at the Polytechnic Museum, the "Marabu" educational camp, and the LevelOne lecture series. From 2010 to 2019, she was a guide and lecturer at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (GMII). She is the author of the bestseller Art History. Simply Put About Important Things (always available).
