Between Times and Places - Summer Music Workshop with Yoav Ne'eman from Birth to Crawling

In the workshop, we will explore a variety of rich musical sources for toddlers and incorporate content that creates direct engagement with the world of the little ones: body songs, animal songs, trips to the sea, through the air, and on the ground. In each session, we will spotlight topics, periods, and places that shape the musical world of both toddlers and parents. During this summer season, we will place special emphasis on Mediterranean summer-related content in each session: we will explore seasonal fruits, the beach, the calm or turbulent waves, and our marine animal friends.

The sessions will include:

100 First Songs and Folk Creations

Who doesn't know the book "100 First Songs"? We "grew up on it," and today's little ones are also growing up with this collection, despite the variety of content available today. These "simple" contents hold the primary essence between children's songs and a newborn child. We will engage in couple dances, circle around singing "Ooga Ooga," soar to the skies with the song "Come Down, Airplane," sail on a "ship," and sit together "by the stream." Of course, instruments will be incorporated into these sessions.

For example, with castanets, we will make rain fall from the sky and tick to the beat of "The Steadfast Clock," and with tambourines, we'll play "The Orchestra Arrives."

Rhythm Workshop:

In this meeting, we will play together in a small drummers' circle. Using tiny darbuka drums, we will beat strong versus weak, fast versus slow, creating a real orchestra. We will ask questions and answer them through music: "I play- what do you play?" "Behind the mountain- one, two, three!" "Two friends walking along the way- bam bam boom!" Adding a shaker, we will sing songs and recitations and fly high like butterflies. We will explore where we can drum: on the floor, on our hands, above our heads, on our belly, or perhaps on our shoulders.

Habubi the puppet will ask us to share about our favorite animals in the world and we will sing animal songs. For example, we will jump with the green frog incorporating a croaking musical instrument, play the mouse song with shakers, and of course, gallop on horses. We won't forget our sea friends, and using scarves, we will sing wave, fish, and sea songs, and sail together in the waters of the Gulf of Eilat. With the "Ocean Drum" (a drum that mimics the sound of waves), we will sing sailors' songs and set off to explore the vast sea.

We will also delve into world music and travel together to the big world. With maracas, we will play songs inspired by South America and those translated from Portuguese ("Come to Rio," "Help Me Help"). Habubi the puppet will introduce us to tropical fruits and vegetables, and with the ukulele and bass guitar, we'll touch upon the reggae world. We will play Bob Marley's songs and sing "The Banana Bender" and "The Lemon Tree" (Fresh Lemon). Along with the darbukas, we will sing a Japanese children's song about a big drum and a small drum, listen and try playing an African drum (djembé) with which we'll play "Hakuna Matata," "The Elephant Song" from The Jungle Book, and the lion song from "The Lion King". Using castanets, we will play flamenco music together, and to conclude, we will head to the farm in the United States with country songs in both Hebrew and English.

The workshop will be held over 2 sessions on Tuesdays, August 11th and August 18th. Registration is for the entire workshop; it is not possible to register for a single session.
