Esther Ofarim, one of the greatest voices to emerge from Israel, achieved spectacular success; and then, almost overnight, disappeared. For decades, she has lived in her modest apartment in Hamburg, far from the Middle Eastern hustle and bustle. Through phone conversations between Shaked, the film's director in Tel Aviv, and Esther in Germany, the geographical and emotional distance between the two unfolds. It is a journey between places, identities, and times, from which emerges the delicate and elusive figure of an artist who is a symbol and distillation of Israeli identity, an essence that she simultaneously rejects and sustains.
